Chair of the ECTN Label Committee

Dear NewsLetter Readers,

The first European quality label for teaching – a Chemistry Eurobachelor® Label - was awarded exactly 10 years ago. The recipient of this label was the University of Helsinki. Terence Mitchell was the key person behind this development. At this time, many countries of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) had not yet concluded about fundamental questions, e.g. the length of the first cycle in tertiary education. Nowadays we appreciate the forward-looking decisions during the early phase of the Bologna process concerning the future standards for quality teaching: the conditions required to be awarded a Eurolabel® did not need to be adopted to the political development. (look at the full paper ...)

Eurolabels®: Yesterday and Today

flag_eu-de_germany.gif by Terry Mitchell, TU Dortmund, Germany

PDF / 264 Kb

So where did the story of the Eurolabels® start?

Well, the real answer is that it started with the Bologna Declaration, which is probably the most important document dealing with higher education in Europe ever published. I will take two partial quotes from the Declaration: its goals included (...)

EUROBACHELORS® from the University of Helsinki since 2005

flag_eu-fi_finland.gif by Kristiina Wähälä,
Department  of Chemistry
University of Helsinki, Finland

PDF / 266 Kb

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Helsinki was among the first to apply for the Eurobachelor quality distinction in 2005, after having adopted the 3+2+4  degree structure based on the Bologna process (BSc 180 ECTS + MSc 120 ECTS + 4 yrs PhD). The new BSc and MSc curricula in Helsinki were built in conformity with the European framework, as a representative of the Department was a participant in the project Tuning Educational Structures in Europe and the working group European Chemistry Thematic Network (ECTN), both of which (...)

The Eurolabels® Adventure of Perugia

flag_eu-it_italia.gif by Antonio Lagana,
Department of Chemistry, Biology and Biotechnology
University of Perugia, Italy

PDF / 438 Kb

Perugia, as apparent from its gate to the ancient town centre shown in the picture (a mix of Etruscan, Roman and Renaissance styles in its lower, central and upper parts) has always enjoyed European mobility and multicultural approaches thanks to its syncretic spirit. And this is, indeed, what has driven the Perugia University (founded in 1307) to enthusiastically participate to ECTN since its very beginning and become one of the first Higher Education Institution in Italy to bear Eurolabels® (...)

The Eurolabels® at Hochschule Fresenius

flag_eu-de_germany.gif by Leo Gros,
Hochschule Fresenius, Idstein, Germany

PDF / 265 Kb

It was in the first half of the nineties that Hochschule Fresenius met some difficulties with the German framework (Rahmenrichtlinien) for Chemistry studies. The relatively rigid number and relative curricular hours for subjects  and for examinations did, for example, not allow our profile with an emphasis on Analytical Chemistry to be hosted within this framework. Even more precarious was the limitation of final year project thesis work to strictly 3 months. It was clear that companies would not take in our students for less than the usual  4-6 months. I managed to “sit out” the problem until the (...)

European Master in Theoretical Chemistry and Computational Modelling (TCCM)

flag_eu-es_spain.gif by Manuel Yáñez,
Universidad Autonoma de Madrid, Spain

PDF / 6.58 Mb

Theoretical Chemistry and Computational Modelling (TCCM) became in the last decades a powerful and almost mandatory tool in modern science.  This moved a bunch of Universities from six European countries to launch, in 2006, a Master in this area, with a clear European flavour.  The support we received from the ECTN was crucial to consolidate our offer and the feedback with ECTN experts led to a significant improvement of our initial structure and to a clear optimization of the internal organization of our Master Program. As a result, our Master has completed already 10 editions, and TCCM has become a highly prestigious trademark in theoretical and computational chemistry. To this contributes the (...)

Euromaster® Measurement Science in Chemistry : The Euromaster® Measurement Science in Chemistry international master programme

flag_eu-be_belgium.gif by Philip Taylor,
JRC, Belgium

PDF / 1.41 Mb

In the priorities of the new Juncker Commission, reducing EU (youth) unemployment rate is a key priority. Amongst others, it calls for a radical rethink on how education and training systems can deliver the skills needed by the labour market. The challenge could not be tougher in the context of widespread austerity measures and cuts in education budgets. For that reason, the European Commission is launching a new strategy called Rethinking Education to encourage Member States to take immediate action to ensure that young people develop the skills and competences needed by the labour market and to achieve their targets for growth and jobs. The Euromaster® Measurement Science in Chemistry is an initiative which the JRC has set up as far back as 2008 to (...)

SCI-ECTN Committee for Eurolabels®

flag_eu-it_italia.gif by Antonella Rossi,
Cattedra di Chimica Analitica, Dipartimento di Scienze Chimiche e Geologiche, Università degli Studi di Cagliari, Monserrato, Italy

The Italian Chemical Society (SCI) strengthens chemistry education for students and dissemination of chemical sciences both in the schools and in the Higher Education Institutions. The President of SCI, Professor Raffaele Riccio, last January 2015, has nominated the SCI – ECTN (European Chemistry Thematic Network) Committee for awarding Eurolabel® in Italy on behalf of the ECTN Label Committee.

Prof. Francesco De Angelis (ECTN Past-president), Prof. Martino Di Serio, and Prof. Antonella Rossi (chair) are the components of the Committee. A group of seven experts with two young researchers are also involved in evaluation procedures leading to the award of Eurolabel® qualifications. The young researchers attended a two days course at the last ECTN General Assembly in Ljubljana, in April 2015 for becoming officially ECTN “young experts” for the evaluation of University curricula.

Twelve Italian Universities have been already awarded the Eurobachelor® and Euromaster ® labels and some of them are now applying for a renewal period. The University of Genova also got the Chemistry Doctorate Eurolabel®.

The Committee SCI – ECTN Committee endeavors to maintain and improve the exchange of information and the contacts with the other European agencies involved in the Eurolabel® qualifications. Furthermore, a presentation of the Eurolabel® program will be available at the web page of the Italian Chemical Society ( The SCI agency is establishing contacts with the National Agency of University and Research Evaluation (ANVUR) for course accreditation and it might act as accreditation agency also in other extra-European countries, following the ECT general rules.

ACRICE 2 - The second African Conference on Research in Chemical Education

flag_af-za_southafrica.gif by Liliana Mammino, Venda (South-Africa)

The conference (which is now considered an IUPAC conference) aims at embracing all the aspects and issues that are relevant for chemical education in Africa and worldwide. It is taking more and more shape as abstracts have started arriving and other activities (e.g., workshops) are being added. The next months will be crucial, as the months in which abstract submission is expected to be more intensive. As mentioned in previous notes, the focuses of individual sessions will be largely determined by the submitted abstracts, as a way through which participants can contribute to shape the conference. It is anticipated that he spectrum of issues will be very broad, to meet the interests of all the levels and contexts in which chemical education is present, and to explore interdisciplinary possibilities.

It is very important that information about this conference may reach all the colleagues who could be interested in participating. We are putting efforts in trying to spread the information as widely as possible. I would also like to ask all those who read this text to help advertise the conference by forwarding the information to all their friends and colleagues who are interested in chemical education.

IUPAC is offering four 1200 USD grants to assist four young African researchers to attend the conference. Young African researchers in chemical education are invited to apply for this support.

Looking forward to welcoming you all at the University of Venda in November! >>> click here to visit the website !

The survey report at DOI:10.1002/chem.201501364
is very well accepted and freely accessible. The Wiley-VCH statistical score ( measures online attention. According to this

  • the report ranks 6th compared to all 2,554 articles ever published in Chemistry – A European Journal and
  • the report is in the 98% percentile compared to all 3,937,345 articles ever tracked by this statistical tool.

Abstract: Which country pays its chemists and chemical engineers the highest salaries? Where can I find a new job quickest? Which chemical sub-discipline offers most jobs? Reliable answers for these and other questions have been derived from the first European employment survey for chemists and chemical engineers, which was carried out in 2013. Here we publish the first general evaluation of the results of this survey.

Learning Objects Competition in Chemistry
Edition 2015-2016

How would you like chemistry to be taught?

flag_eu-it_italia.gif by Gino Paolucci, Venice, IT (E.U.)

Since one of the objectives of the ECNT is the optimization of the educational systems, the last edition of the Student Contest has been opened to the students and teachers of schools and universities on how they wanted Chemistry to be taught. The results obtained in the last year convinced us to repeat the same theme in the edition 2015-2016 of previous. In this edition we would like National coordinators ask more students (in particular the recent graduates) to participate to have their own opinion and their suggestions.

We’ll start again this year with a national phase. Deadline for uploading artworks is 31 December, 2015; and deadline for public voting is 31 January, 2016. The national coordinator will select the three best artworks based on the following parameters:

Number of votes: 35/100
Innovation: 35/100
Balance and depth level audience: 30/100

The three artworks (possibly translated in English) selected in the national phase will participate to the final international phase. The deadline for voting will be 15 February 2016. The finalist artworks will receive a Diploma.

Between all finalists the three best artworks will be selected by a Commission made by the National Coordinators who participated in the contest by using the same criteria as in the national phase and the results will be published at the end of February 2016.  The three artworks winners will be rewarded with an Android tablet to one of the Authors.

Dortmund-Bremen-Symposium on Chemical and Science Education 2016
May 26-28, 2016 - Dortmund, Germany

flag_eu-de_germany.gif by Ingo Eilks, Bremen, DE (E.U.)

The 23rd Symposium on Chemistry and Science Education will continue a long tradition begun in 1981 with the first symposium on chemical education organized by Hans-Jürgen Schmidt. The upcoming symposium will continue this tradition. It will be held at TU Dortmund University for its 2016 session. The 2016 symposium is titled Science Education Research and Practical Work”.

There is unanimous agreement that learning in the laboratory and experiments are essential parts of any student-oriented science education. However, many promises related to learning in the laboratory proofed in the past not to be self-evident. Research suggests that just using demonstrations or confirmatory type experiments will not dig out the vast potential of learning with experiments neither for developing an adequate understanding of the Nature of Science, nor will it contribute to the development of problem-solving and inquiry skills. A lot of research has been done in the last 40 years on learning in the laboratory, however there are still many questions unanswered yet (...)
